The most sacred object of younger generations has become their phones. No longer is identity constricted to the corporal, rather the digital avatar has become an extension of the physical, rendering a more cybernetic persona as time progresses. The phone holds memories, images of intimate moments, private conversations, hidden secrets, embarrassing search histories, and so much more personal information. The phone has become heavily guarded and worshipped in the same way a church might venerate a relic.
In conversation with performances such as Yoko Ono’s Cut and Marina Abromavich’s Rhythm 0, the performance poses the question “is a desecration of the digital avatar just as aggressive as violation of the corporal?” Nothing will be censored. 000000 is the password.
This was Neveah Marquez’s first performance since publicly announcing her transition. In spirit of the exhibition’s excavation of vulnerability as a part of sacredness, she was nearly nude seldom her black panties and black Prada heels.
Her body was strapped to a metal cross built from a deconstructed window guard. Over her chest was her phone unlocked. Two tv monitors were to the side of her, mirroring the phone’s screen, adding a layer of surveillance within the audience.
